Attractions and Activities in Salisbury, Maryland

Salisbury is located in the middle of the Delmarva Peninsula, and serves as the seat of Wicomico County, the largest county on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. It’s location at the head of the Wicomico River was an influential factor in the city’s growth, and after becoming an official port in 1732, became the second most active port in Maryland, behind only Baltimore. The town is known for its Federal, Georgian, and Victorian architecture; it’s rich history during colonial times has left an array of buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, including The Gillis-Grier House, Honeysuckle Lodge, Sen. William P. Jackson House, Pemberton Hall, Perry-Cooper House, Poplar Hill Mansion, Union Station, and F. Leonard Wailes Law Office.

Nestled squarely between beaches and the bay, Salisbury is the self-proclaimed “Capital of the Eastern Shore”. The area is undergoing renovations over the next decade to maintain the rapid growth enjoyed throughout most of the 20th century. Catch a ballgame over at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, home to the Delmarva Shorebirds, a Class A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. You can also check out the city’s zoo, featuring exhibits of North, Central and South American animals. The city’s nightlife is alive and well thanks to a college town atmosphere, with a heavy student population attending Salisbury University.

The economy here continues to grow as well. The multi-national poultry corporation Perdue Farms is headquartered in Salisbury, while other major companies such as Verizon, Peninsula Regional Medical Center and Pepsi have major operations in the area. Other industries such as electronic component manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, shipbuilding, and agriculture are popular throughout the city and Wicomico County.
