Attractions and Activities in Frederick, Maryland

Situated in Northern Maryland less than an hour away from Washington D.C., Baltimore and Gettysburg, the city of Frederick is best known for its beautiful mountain views, celebrated wineries, dense orchards and vibrant communities. Visitors here have the opportunity to hike the Appalachian Trail, visit an array of Maryland wineries along the Frederick Wine Trail, and tour Civil War battlefields – all in the same day. One of the best areas to visit is the Historic District, housing more than 200 retailers, restaurants and antique shops along Market, Patrick and East Streets.

The city served as an important hub during colonial times. Routes such as the north-south Indian trail and east-west routes to Chesapeake Bay, Baltimore and Washington DC helped develop the local economy and turn it into the seat of Western Maryland during the 19th century. Today, the city is located at the junction of several major roadways, including Interstate 70, Interstate 270, U.S. Route 340, U.S. Route 40, U.S. Route 40 Alternate and U.S. Route 15. It’s also home to the (KFDK) Frederick Municipal Airport, which mainly services general aviation traffic and is an ideal destination for private flights.

Frederick’s proximity to Washington, D.C. is an important factor in the development of its local economy, as well as Fort Detrick, the city’s largest employer. It is also home to Riverside Research Park, a large biomedical research center on the east side of town. Tenants at the research center include the National Cancer Institute (Fort Detrick) as well as Charles River Labs. The result of continued and enhanced federal investment means the area will continue to grow over the next decade.
