Established in the mid-20th century, Tipton Airport (FME) originally served as a military airstrip, later converted to a public use airport to address the transportation needs of a growing community.

The airport was set for closure as part of the Base Alignment and Closure (BRAC) Act of 1988, closing in 1995 and re-opening as a civilian airport in 1999.
